Liliana’s voice caught at the words. “He’s in danger. That’s what he means by ‘one way or the other.’ Either the danger will pass, or he’ll come to me as a spirit.”

Nicki’s eyes widened. “How are you supposed to find Alvaro Ramirez from just a ring? There’s no address.”

Liliana shook her head. “I don’t need an address. Alvaro Ramirez is a ghost. I can feel his presence.”

“Do you think you should try to contact him today? You’ve already done so much—” Nicki couldn’t help worrying.

“How can I delay when he has news of Luis? I’ll be all right. I’ve recovered a bit, and I’ll make an early night of it.”

“How about after dinner at least, so you have a good meal for fortitude?” Nicki coaxed. “If you push yourself and collapse, it does no one any good—including Luis.”

Liliana nodded with reluctance. “All right. But I’m definitely doing this tonight.”

Just then, the cook called for them to come in for dinner. They found the table set for the two of them.

“Mr. Conroy said to send his regrets that he wasn’t able to join you,” the cook told them. “He’s taking his dinner in his office tonight. I’m supposed to tell you to enjoy the food and save room for dessert.”

The meal began with a chilled mango soup. Baked grouper with an orange glaze lay on a bed of fluffy white rice accompanied by peas and pearl onions.

Nicki dug in with gusto, surprised at how hungry she was. Liliana ate slowly, but Nicki noted with satisfaction that her friend ate most of her serving.

“And homemade banana pudding for dessert.” The cook placed a generous serving in front of each of them. “Enjoy!”

When they finished, both women took cups of coffee to the sitting room. Liliana’s gaze drifted to the letter and ring on the side table. Nicki didn’t say anything, letting her friend use the moments while they savored their drink to collect her nerve.

“I’m ready,” Liliana said with determination.

“If it’s less stress for you, it’s okay if you don’t make the ghost visible. You can tell me about it afterward,” Nicki said, still concerned.

“Let’s see how willing he is to appear. Some ghosts are eager to tell their story.”

She set aside her cup and took the letter and ring in her hands. Nicki watched the now-familiar ritual as Liliana closed her eyes and breathed deeply.

“Alvaro Ramirez. I’m Luis’s sister. He sent me your ring and told me you had information. Please make yourself known. Luis is missing, and I’m very worried.”

Liliana sat quietly, waiting. Far more restless, Nicki tamped down on her agitation, trying to keep her leg from jiggling and her fingers from drumming.

After what seemed like forever to Nicki but was probably only a few minutes, the gray figure of a man flickered into sight.
